Holiday Special: Love to Hate, Hate to Love
Why Single People Should Not Feel Bitter About Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day. You either love it or you hate it.  Maybe you really don’t care, but regardless, it is a holiday that will be shoved in your face, one way or another. It’s a time where a large majority of singles may feel resentful of their Singledom, thus initiating a bitterness that adheres to this day full of roses, chocolate and sexual tension. I am here to tell you that you shouldn’t feel this way. Here are the reasons why:

It’s just another day.
If you don’t care about Valentine’s Day, this one is for you. At some point in a time a silly chick flick was made about it, but really, who saw that movie anyway? Okay... Maybe I did. But I am a sucker for chick flicks. Really though, 14th falls between 13th and 15th, which are merely numbers. Another day, another dollar, yo.

Valentine’s Day is an expression of love, not relationships.
At what point in time did we confine expressing our love only to a significant other? The best V-days I’ve had, have NOT been during a relationship, but rather single, with good friends, good wine, and good food. The ultimate problem with Valentine’s Day is that it is a corporate sell-out that limits the expression of love only to exclusive relationships, but this should not be the case.

Valentine’s Day is an excuse to eat plenty of chocolate and not feel guilty about it.
Need I say more? Treat-yourself recommendation: Milano’s double chocolate cookies paired with a nice Pinot Noir and perhaps a Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks flick. Perfect. Night.

Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity to feel optimistic about life, love & relationships.
If you utilize this day as a time to nurture your relationships with friends and/or family, you will find that you’re not alone. You must realize that there are opportunities presented to you every day that could potentially change your overall perspective on life, love and what it means to be happy. This path of self-discovery will in turn help you find what you want, when you want it, when the time is right.

Remember, there are plenty of people in your life who love YOU and it truly is a wonderful thing that you’ve been given a day to return that love. Whether it’s your friends, family or cats (yep, that’s me) we all deserve to give a hug, kiss or two from the people that have significantly affected us - which ultimately will never be confined to one person. And that is the greatest part about being single.

Happy Loving,
Madeline
